Indian stock market benchmarks, the Sensex and the Nifty 50, closed in the red on Thursday, July 25, extending their losses into the fifth consecutive session. The Sensex closed 109 points, or 0.14 per cent, lower at 80,039.80, while the Nifty 50 ended at 24,406.10, down 7 points, or 0.03 per cent. This decline was attributed to weak global cues.
Meanwhile, Adani Green Energy announced a 95 percent increase in consolidated net profit, amounting to ₹ 629 crore for the quarter ending June 30, 2024. This marks a significant rise from the ₹ 323 crore reported during the same period last year.
Tech Mahindra also reported strong Q1 results for fiscal 2024-25 (Q1FY25), announcing a 23 per cent rise in consolidated net profit at ₹ 851.5 crore, compared to ₹ 692.5 crore in the corresponding period last year. However, the company’s revenue from operations in the first quarter of the current fiscal fell 1.2 per cent to ₹ 13,006 crore, compared to ₹ 13,159 crore in the year-ago period.
In Canada, a series of temple vandalism incidents has sparked outrage and calls for action against ‘anti-India elements’. The latest incident involved the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Alberta, where Hindu-phobic graffiti targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indo-Canadian MP Chandra Arya was found spray painted on the exterior siding. The Ministry of External Affairs has called for strict action against these elements, citing a ‘recurring’ pattern of attacks on temples in Canada.
Additionally, heavy rainfall in Maharashtra led to the cancellation of several trains plying between Mumbai and Pune, including the Pragati Express. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Mumbai and adjoining areas as a flood-like situation emerged across parts of Pune, with around 400 people evacuated from low-lying areas.
In a separate development, Devendra Fadnavis, a prominent politician in Maharashtra, claimed to have ‘audiovisual evidence’ against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, where he is heard talking about Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar. This comes after Deshmukh alleged that Fadnavis had asked him to implicate Thackeray, Aditya Thackeray, Ajit Pawar, and Anil Parab.
