Blizzard Entertainment is considering bringing back the 6v6 format in Overwatch 2, after initially removing it before the game’s launch. In a lengthy blog post, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller revealed that the team is looking into conducting events to test out new “composition formats,” specifically 6v6, based on feedback from the player community.
Keller acknowledged the community’s requests for a 6v6 test, stating, “Why not put various forms of 6v6 in the game in order to gauge the results? We agree, and based on your feedback, we’re exploring how we can test different forms of 6v6 in the game to gauge the results.”
However, there are several factors that need to be considered before a potential return of 6v6. Keller pointed out that Overwatch 2 was designed with 5v5 in mind, meaning the user interface and other features could be affected by a shift to 6v6. He also expressed concerns about the impact on queue times and the potential for frustrating new players who have only experienced the 5v5 format.
The move to 5v5 in Overwatch 2 was a significant change from the original Overwatch, which featured 6v6 gameplay. This change was implemented to address several issues, including reducing queue times and streamlining team balance. The removal of a tank from each team was intended to improve the game’s pace and highlight the contributions of other roles, particularly DPS.
Despite the initial rationale for the shift to 5v5, many players expressed their preference for the 6v6 format, citing a lack of variety and a perceived decrease in depth of gameplay. It remains to be seen whether Blizzard will be able to overcome the challenges associated with bringing back 6v6, but the developers are open to exploring possibilities based on player feedback.
