Schumer Urges Trump to Replace Vance as Running Mate, Trump Campaign Slams ‘Cat Lady’ Comments

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has urged former President Trump to replace Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, as his running mate, citing Vance’s recent controversial comments and perceived extremism. During an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Schumer expressed his belief that Vance is “an incredibly bad choice” for the GOP ticket, arguing that his actions and statements have become increasingly “extreme” and “erratic.”

Schumer pointed to Vance’s 2021 interview where he appeared to disparage “childless cat ladies” in the Democratic Party, specifically mentioning Vice President Kamala Harris and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as members of this group. He suggested that Trump might be having second thoughts about his choice, saying, “I’ll bet President Trump is sitting there scratching his head and wondering, ‘Why did I pick this guy?’”

Trump 2024 senior campaign adviser Chris LaCivita has defended Vance, arguing that the criticism surrounding his comments is “blatantly taken out of context.” LaCivita insists that the Trump-Vance campaign is not opposed to “childless women,” refuting claims made by the liberal media.

Vance, the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” a memoir that explores his upbringing in Appalachia, gained national attention when Trump selected him as his running mate at the start of the Republican National Convention. Republicans have presented Vance as a voice for forgotten working class Americans, particularly highlighting his mother’s 10-year journey to sobriety. However, the Harris campaign has countered this message, accusing Vance of being “loyal only to Trump, not to our country” and a “rubber stamp for [Trump’s] extreme agenda.”

During a campaign rally with Trump in Minnesota, Vance responded to Harris’s criticism of his loyalty, pointing to his service in the Marine Corps, his time in Iraq, and his business endeavors as evidence of his commitment to the country. He questioned Harris’s own contributions to the nation, specifically referencing her immigration policies and their impact on the border.

Schumer defended the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies, claiming that Democrats have implemented a “tough border policy” designed to curb the flow of migrants. He stated that Republicans initially supported this plan but have since shifted their stance, favoring chaos at the border for political gain. Schumer asserted that Democrats are ready to defend their border policies and believes they will ultimately win the argument with voters.
