Mortal Kombat 1 Gets Beastly: Animalities Return in Free Update

Get ready for some serious carnage! Mortal Kombat 1 is bringing back the beloved animalities in a free update, marking their return after a 29-year absence. This news dropped at San Diego Comic-Con alongside the unveiling of the Khaos Reigns expansion, a much anticipated addition to the game.

Animalities, introduced in 1995’s Mortal Kombat 3, are similar to fatalities but with a twist: instead of a brutal finishing move, the character transforms into an animal and devours their opponent. The trailer showcased a hippo, a gorilla, and a dinosaur skeleton, all reveling in their animalistic glory.

While some transformations are pretty obvious, like Scorpion turning into a scorpion, the gorilla and T-Rex skeleton are newcomers to the series, adding a layer of intrigue. Every playable character, including all DLC characters, will have their own unique animality. Imagine Homelander, the Superman-esque character from The Boys, becoming an eagle – that’s a sight to behold! The animality update, alongside the Khaos Reigns expansion, is set to release on September 24th across all platforms.

Speaking of Khaos Reigns, this expansion is Mortal Kombat 1’s big year-two story update, introducing new characters to fight against Titan Havik, who hails from an alternate timeline. The trailer offered our first glimpse at Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor, all featuring revamped backstories and a renewed sense of purpose in the game’s narrative.

Adding to the already impressive roster, the next Kombat Pack DLC brings in Ghostface from the Scream franchise, the legendary Conan the Barbarian, and the iconic T-1000 from Terminator 2. Hopefully, these additions will also get their own unique animalities.

The Khaos Reigns expansion is now available for pre-order on consoles and PC. Those who pre-order will receive the previous Kombat Pack, featuring six earlier DLC characters and five Kameo fighters, as well as four new skins at launch, including Mortal Kombat 3 versions of Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot. Get ready for a new wave of mayhem in Mortal Kombat 1!
