Sri Lanka Appoints Charith Asalanka as New ODI Captain

Sri Lanka has made a significant change to its leadership ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against India. Charith Asalanka, the 27-year-old middle-order batsman, has been named as the new ODI captain, replacing Kusal Mendis. This appointment follows Asalanka’s recent elevation as the T20 captain, a role he assumed after Wanindu Hasaranga resigned following Sri Lanka’s early exit from the T20 World Cup in June.

Asalanka’s appointment marks a new era for Sri Lanka’s white-ball cricket, with the young batsman now at the helm of both the ODI and T20 formats. While Mendis remains a part of the 16-member ODI squad announced by Sri Lanka Cricket, the change in leadership signifies a shift in the team’s strategic direction.

The three-match ODI series is scheduled to take place at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, starting on August 2. With Asalanka at the helm, Sri Lanka will be looking to put on a strong performance against the formidable Indian team. The series promises to be a captivating encounter, as both teams seek to assert their dominance in the ODI format.
