Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya presented a cash award of Rs 22.5 lakh to Olympic medalist Sarabjot Singh on Thursday. The felicitation took place in recognition of Sarabjot’s bronze medal win in the mixed air pistol event at the Paris Olympics, achieved alongside Manu Bhaker. The ceremony also welcomed the return of other Indian shooters, including Arjun Babuta, Ramita Jindal, Rhythm Sangwan, Sandeep Singh, and Arjun Singh Cheema, who competed in Paris. Coaches Suma Shirur, Samaresh Jung, and Sarabjot’s personal coach Abhishek Rana also accompanied the squad.
During the felicitation, the Sports Minister acknowledged the impressive performance of the Indian shooting team in Paris. He praised the athletes’ dedication and emphasized the significance of their achievements, even acknowledging the disappointment of narrowly missing out on medals for some. Minister Mandaviya urged the athletes to maintain their passion and use any setbacks as motivation to excel in future competitions.
Highlighting the success of the Khelo India scheme in fostering young champions, the Minister said, “Sarabjot is a personification of this pyramidal structure. Khelo India to Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to the Olympic podium finish.” He emphasized that while support systems are crucial, ultimate success is a result of hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support of parents, coaches, and mentors.
The Minister also introduced the new KIRTI (Khelo India Rising Talent Initiative) scheme, a nationwide drive aimed at identifying and nurturing sports talent from grassroots levels. He expressed confidence that this scheme will be a game-changer in identifying future Olympians and providing them with the necessary support to excel in their chosen sports. The Minister of State for Sports, Ms. Raksha Khadse, also graced the occasion, extending her congratulations to the returning shooting squad.
