A series of cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday has led to widespread devastation and fears of over 50 fatalities. Rescue operations are underway, but the challenging terrain and disrupted communication are hampering efforts to reach those affected.
Himachal Minister Vikramaditya Singh stated that the official death toll can only be confirmed after the completion of rescue operations. Baladi Village in Kullu has been cut off from the outside world, with roads, electricity, and water supply disrupted. A villager told ANI that seven houses and a primary school were washed away by the flood.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of isolated heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh from August 3 to 10. Minister Singh confirmed that a cloudburst occurred 2-3 days ago near the Shrikhand mountaintop, resulting in significant destruction in Rampur and Kullu.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited the affected areas, taking stock of the situation and briefing officials. He has directed the establishment of Bailey bridges at various locations, and police personnel are deployed for rescue and support.
In response to the disaster, the state government has announced an immediate relief of ₹50,000 for affected families, with promises of further compensation. Chief Minister Sukhu has also contacted Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting support from the Centre.
The rescue operations are being conducted jointly by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), State Police, and Home Guard personnel. The state government is prioritizing retrieving bodies and restoring connectivity in affected areas.
