Heavy Rains in Pune Lead to Evacuations and NDRF Deployment

As unabated rainfall continues to lash Pune, Maharashtra, authorities have taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents. Around 150 people have been shifted to safe locations, and a 25-member team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is on standby. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Pune, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.

In response to the IMD’s forecast, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has implemented a comprehensive plan. Jayant Bhosekar, Deputy Commissioner (Motor Vehicles Department) of the PMC, stated that approximately 150 individuals have been relocated to safe shelters, with the PMC providing food and necessary assistance. Further actions will be taken based on the latest information provided by the IMD.

The heavy rainfall in the catchment areas over the past fortnight has led to the release of 35,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water from the Khadakwasla dam in Pune district. This discharge has resulted in the relocation of residents near the dam as the water level in the Mutha river rises.

Considering the water discharges from the Khadakwasla, Mulshi, Pavana, and other dams in the Pune region, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has instructed authorities to remain vigilant. The Chief Minister has emphasized the need to relocate residents from hazardous zones to safer locations, seeking assistance from the NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Army if required.

The overflowing Pawna river has caused water accumulation in the premises of Morya Gosavi Ganpati Temple in Pimpri Chinchwad. This flooding occurred due to the large discharge of water from the Pawna Dam.

In Pune’s Ekta Nagar area, Army personnel were deployed to assist residents affected by flooding caused by the release of excess water from the Khadakwasla dam. The fire brigade department also conducted evacuation operations in the area.
