News from the Chinese tech forum Board Channels indicates that NVIDIA is planning to discontinue production of its popular GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. This decision comes as a surprise, as the RTX 3060 has been the most used GPU among PC gamers for several months, according to the Steam Hardware Survey.
The Board Channels admin, citing sources believed to be accurate, states that NVIDIA has begun notifying partners to place their final orders for the RTX 3060. GPU manufacturers Colorful and Palit have been specifically mentioned as receiving these notifications. While NVIDIA will continue to fulfill orders for the RTX 3060 over the coming months, the impact on retail availability is expected to be noticeable.
With the RTX 3060 being phased out, gamers are likely to turn to its successor, the GeForce RTX 4060. Despite costing the same $299 USD, the RTX 4060 offers faster performance and features like DLSS 3 Frame Generation. However, it comes with 8GB of VRAM compared to the RTX 3060’s 12GB.
