A tragic loss has struck the Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh, as one of the five African cheetah cubs named Gamini has passed away at the age of five months. The incident occurred on Monday, with the female cub’s health deteriorating rapidly in the morning. Despite immediate emergency treatment, the cub succumbed to her condition.
The Lion Project, responsible for the reintroduction of cheetahs to India, had initially observed the cub’s weakened state on July 29th. During a routine health check, officials noticed the cub struggling to lift its hind portion and dragging its body. The cub was promptly rescued and transported to a nearby hospital. Medical examinations revealed a fractured vertebral column, and the Lion Project provided intensive care. However, the young cub’s life was tragically cut short.
The cause of the cub’s death is currently unknown and will be determined by an autopsy. This is the second cub from Gamini’s litter to die, as one cub passed away on June 4th. The remaining four cubs, along with the thirteen adult cheetahs in the KNP, are reported to be healthy and are being regularly monitored.
The Lion Project has implemented measures to address potential threats to the cheetah population, such as administering treatment for tick and parasitic infections. The organization remains committed to ensuring the well-being and success of the cheetah reintroduction program in India.
