Gabby Thomas, the American sprinter, finally achieved the global title she had been aiming for, delivering a dominant performance to win Olympic 200m gold on Tuesday. In doing so, she denied Julien Alfred a sprint double. Thomas, 27, had previously secured bronze in Tokyo and silver in last year’s world championships, but she was in complete control throughout the final, crossing the finish line in 21.83 seconds. Alfred, who made history by winning Saint Lucia’s first Olympic medal with her 100m victory on Saturday, finished in a clear second place with a time of 22.08 seconds. Brittany Brown, representing the U.S., claimed bronze with a time of 20.20 seconds. There was further disappointment for the British duo of Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita, who finished fourth and fifth respectively.
