However, just a day before this victory, Khelif was subjected to a wave of online bullying after her opponent, Italian boxer Angela Carini, walked out of their fight claiming to have never felt a punch like Khelif’s before.
Carini’s reaction quickly sparked rumors about Khelif’s gender, with some questioning her legitimacy as a female athlete. This prompted Khelif to address the accusations publicly, highlighting her long history in the sport, her extensive training in Italy, and the familiarity of both her and her training methods to the Italian boxing community.
Khelif expressed her disappointment with the media campaign against her, but emphasized her focus on achieving her goals. She also used her platform to promote a message of positivity, urging people to uphold the Olympic principles and refrain from bullying athletes.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also spoke out in support of Khelif, releasing an official statement confirming her gender and refuting the unfounded rumors. Khelif expressed gratitude for the IOC’s support and shared her pride in representing Algeria.
Carini has since apologized for her statements, expressing regret and sadness over the controversy. She stated that she had no intention of causing harm to Khelif and apologized to both her opponent and the public.
As Khelif prepares for the final match on August 10th, she faces the challenge of defeating Yang Liu of China to win Algeria its first gold medal in women’s boxing. Despite the obstacles she has overcome, Khelif remains focused on achieving her goal and making history for her country.
