Following the resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina from Dhaka, Bangladesh has been engulfed in a wave of violence, leaving a trail of destruction and at least 29 dead. The victims include Awami League leaders, associates, and their family members, targeted in attacks and clashes across the country.
In Satkhira, at least 10 people lost their lives in attacks and violence. Arson and looting were reported at Satkhira Sadar and Shyamnagar police stations, while houses and businesses belonging to Awami League leaders and activists were vandalized and looted.
Comilla witnessed a horrifying display of mob violence, resulting in the deaths of 11 people. A particularly tragic incident involved the three-story house of former councilor Md Shah Alam in Ashoktala, which was set ablaze by a mob. The fire claimed the lives of six individuals, including five teenagers, their bodies recovered on Monday night and Tuesday.
The violence extended to other areas, with at least 10 people succumbing to a fire incident in Natore. The fire engulfed the house of MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul, ignited after people reacted angrily to news of Hasina’s resignation and departure. Four individuals were found dead within the house, their bodies discovered in rooms, balconies, and roofs.
In Feni, the bodies of two Juba League leaders were recovered by locals. The body of Mushfiqur Rahim, office secretary of Dhalia Union Juba League, was found under a bridge in Sonagazi Upazila, while the body of Badsha Mia was discovered in Feni Sadar Upazila.
Lalmonirhat saw a similar tragedy as locals recovered six bodies from the house of district AL Joint General Secretary Suman Khan. The house had been set ablaze by a mob on Monday.
The violence also claimed the lives of two Juba League leaders in Bogra, who were hacked to death in Dirkhipara and Shajahanpur upazilas.
The widespread violence and the tragic loss of life highlight the deep political divisions within Bangladesh and the volatile situation following the departure of Sheikh Hasina. The events raise concerns for the country’s stability and security as authorities grapple with the aftermath of the unrest.
