The decision was made to prioritize the safety of attendees, with the organizer stating, “With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.” All tickets will be automatically refunded.
Austrian authorities have swiftly acted upon the intelligence, detaining two individuals suspected of plotting attacks on concerts. Franz Ruf, director general for public security, revealed at a press conference that the 19-year-old suspect, an Austrian citizen, had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and showed a particular interest in targeting the Taylor Swift concerts.
Police searched the residence of one of the suspects in Ternitz, Lower Austria, and are meticulously analyzing items collected during the search. The threat was deemed credible enough to cancel the concerts, which were scheduled to take place from Thursday to Saturday. The events were expected to draw crowds of around 65,000 attendees each day.
