magma, an artist unit formed in 2008 by Jun Sugiyama and Kenichi Miyazawa, is known for its unique creations that blend recycled materials, resins, and electric appliances to form a distinct artistic vision. Their work extends beyond original pieces to encompass furniture, props, stage design, and spatial direction.
From August 10th (Saturday) to September 2nd (Monday), magma will present their exhibition ‘TRICK HEARTS’ at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO on the 4th floor of Shibuya PARCO. This marks their first major exhibition in seven years, and it reinterprets the classic art form of ‘trick art’ through magma’s signature vibrant colors and unconventional worldviews.
The exhibition will showcase new works and feature collaborations with nine artists and brands from Japan and abroad. Visitors can expect a captivating encounter with magma’s distinctive artistic creations.
magma Exhibition ‘TRICK HEARTS’ Statement
“We find pleasure in being visually deceived and actively seek out unique visual stimuli. By manipulating the uncertainty of human perception and our unconscious biases and preconceptions, our predecessors gave rise to forms of expression such as ‘trompe l’oeil’ and ‘Surrealism’. Building upon these classical expressions, we endeavor to create a contemporary ‘trick’ that is both humorous and thought-provoking, questioning the very nature of ‘seeing’. This is a challenge to present a new way of viewing the world.”
