The Kenya Aviation Workers Union has declared that employees of Kenya Airways and the Kenya Airports Authority will go on strike beginning August 19th. This action is in direct response to an investment proposal put forward by Adani Airport Holdings, an Indian company, regarding the country’s main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. The strike is anticipated to cause substantial disruptions to Kenya Airways, the national carrier, and to the operations of the airport itself, a critical hub for travel in Africa. Moss Ndiema, head of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union, stated, “We shall reconsider our intention to engage in industrial action… only if the Adani Airport Holdings Limited’s deal is abandoned in its entirety.” Last month, the Kenya Airports Authority announced that the investment proposal from Adani Airport Holdings included plans for a second runway at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The union’s strong stance against the deal highlights the potential for significant disruptions to Kenya’s air travel infrastructure and raises questions about the future of the proposed investment project.
