Hikaru Utada’s unique performance style has been further elevated thanks to a remarkable collaboration between Spiber, a biotech venture focused on sustainable material innovation, and A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, a fashion brand known for its avant-garde designs. This partnership resulted in the creation of a breathtaking stage outfit for the renowned singer, showcasing the potential of Spiber’s innovative protein fiber.
The stage outfit, characterized by its flowing form and vibrant colors, was designed and crafted by the A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE team, led by designer Yoshiyuki Miyazawa. The team’s creation is a tapestry of intricate details, combining a sense of grandeur with a delicate touch. The key to this innovative design lies in Spiber’s ‘Brewed ProteinTM Fiber,’ a revolutionary material developed by Kazuhide Sekiyama, a pioneer in the field of artificial protein synthesis.
Sekiyama, inspired by the remarkable properties of spider silk, established Spiber in 2007, following his research at Keio University’s Advanced Life Science Institute. Spiber has been at the forefront of developing artificial protein fibers, capitalizing on the company’s expertise in the properties of proteins found in nature. Their groundbreaking work has garnered attention through collaborations with renowned brands like The North Face, Sacai, and Yuima Nakazato, bridging the gap between the Japanese textile industry and cutting-edge bio-research.
The ‘Brewed ProteinTM Fiber’ is produced through a fermentation process using plant-based biomass as its raw material. This innovative material boasts a silk-like sheen and delicate texture, mimicking the luxurious qualities of cashmere and wool. Spiber’s versatile fiber can be transformed into a range of threads and fabrics, making it a desirable choice for a variety of brands.
In 2021, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) revised its standards to include protein fibers made through biotechnology alongside natural protein fibers. This recognition solidifies Brewed ProteinTM Fiber’s status as a cutting-edge material, pushing the boundaries of textile innovation. Compared to animal-derived fibers like cashmere and wool, Brewed ProteinTM Fiber, derived from precise fermentation, offers significant advantages in terms of environmental sustainability. This material significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water consumption.
Utada herself expressed her appreciation for the unique features of the new fabric. During her July 30th performance in Sendai, she remarked: “I keep discovering new things about the costume every time I see it on the screen! The back is so different! It’s light and made of a really new material. I think it’s called Brewed Protein. It’s supposed to be really good for the environment. It’s like getting three delicious meals in one! It’s amazing!”
The stage outfit incorporates a blend of Brewed ProteinTM Fiber and polyester, strategically woven to take advantage of the differing shrinkage properties of these materials when exposed to heat. This technique, known as “Steam Stretch,” is a signature innovation of Issey Miyake, resulting in a garment with exceptional stretch and a uniquely tailored form.
Designer Miyazawa reflects on the creative process behind this remarkable costume: “We were approached by Spiber, and this is the first time we’ve provided costumes for a musician. I was drawn to the potential of the material itself and the future vision shared by CEO Sekiyama. We decided to embrace this challenge. Utada continues to evolve while remaining true to herself. She is truly one-of-a-kind. We aimed to create a costume that would support her unique expressions, harmonize with the music, and enhance her presence within the overall art form that is a live performance. We carefully incorporated Brewed ProteinTM Fiber to achieve the unique texture and form.”
