Food prices have been on the rise, making it more important than ever to be mindful of food waste. In the UK alone, approximately 9.52 million metric tonnes of food are wasted each year – enough to feed over 30 million people!
One common culprit of food waste is fresh herbs. While they add a burst of flavor to dishes, they can quickly wilt and go to waste if not used promptly.
Tesco, a major supermarket chain in the UK, has come up with a brilliant solution to prevent this: freezing your herbs.
The supermarket giant suggests roughly chopping soft herbs like basil, coriander, and parsley, and then placing them in ice cube trays, filling them with water. Once frozen, you can simply defrost the herb cubes on a plate or add them directly to your pasta or curries.
For larger quantities, Tesco recommends placing whole bunches of herbs in freezer bags and chopping them as needed. No defrosting required!
Freezing herbs not only extends their shelf life but also allows you to easily incorporate them into various dishes, such as soups, stews, and roasted potatoes, as the weather starts to cool down.
So, next time you find yourself with an abundance of fresh herbs, remember Tesco’s clever tip and prevent those precious flavors from going to waste!
