Each year, the Maison Guerlain presents a contemporary art exhibition at their iconic address on the Champs-Élysées. Following a radiant homage to the work of Charles Baudelaire and the flowers that compose it, the French house invites visitors on a journey into Korean culture. In partnership with Paris+ by Art Basel, the exhibition titled ‘Good Morning Korea, Au pays du matin calme’ presents the multifaceted perspectives of artists from different generations. This is an artistic and insightful exploration not to be missed.
For the 17th edition of its annual exhibitions, Maison Guerlain has chosen to immerse itself in South Korean culture. This country has proven to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the West. Its cinematic, literary, culinary, and musical creations are refreshing the cultural landscape of the world, infusing it with a breath of tradition while keeping a keen eye on the modern challenges of our society. The influence of Korean culture on the collective imagination is such that ‘for Maison Guerlain, which combines heritage and innovation, the choice of South Korea was obvious,’ explains Ann Caroline Prazan, Director of Artistic, Cultural, and Heritage Department at Guerlain, in the exhibition’s press release.
Through a unique multi-sensory experience, the ‘Good Morning Korea, Au pays du matin calme’ exhibition invites the public to explore its space through a sensory journey accompanied by several artworks. These pieces illustrate the relationships that South Korean artists maintain with nature, technology, and modern society. Among them, Lee Bull explores the distorted realities of modern identity with his cyborgs, blending feminine forms and mechanical elements. Biole Park Chae captures the ephemeral beauty through textiles and bamboo. Anicka Yi utilizes algorithms to create holographic paintings, merging her visual DNA with biological and technological patterns.
Throughout the visit, a subtle link is established between the visual memories brought back from the Land of Morning Calm by the exhibited artists and the olfactory memories developed by the house. ‘Good Morning Korea, Au Pays du matin calme,’ an exhibition to be discovered free of charge from October 16th to November 12th, 2024 at La Maison Guerlain, 68 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, 75008, Paris.
