Typhoon Ampil is causing significant disruptions in Japan as it approaches the Tokyo area, bringing with it strong winds, heavy rain, and the threat of flooding and mudslides.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued warnings for the entire country, urging residents to be vigilant. The typhoon, with sustained winds of 162 kph (101 mph), is projected to reach waters near Tokyo on Friday evening before continuing its northward trajectory towards the Kanto and Tohoku regions.
As a precautionary measure, the Central Japan Railway has suspended all Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Nagoya for the entire day. Numerous flights have also been canceled at major airports, including Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita, as well as Kansai, Osaka, and Chubu. These cancellations are impacting an estimated 90,000 passengers. Additionally, some highways are expected to face partial closures.
Japanese officials are advising residents to stay away from rivers and beaches and to exercise extreme caution due to the strong winds that could send objects flying. Shuichi Tachihara, the JMA chief forecaster, has issued a stark warning, calling for preparedness against “extremely fierce winds and extremely fierce seas.”
