The horror-comedy sequel ‘Stree 2’, starring Shraddha Kapoor, has taken the Indian box office by storm, raking in an impressive ₹54.35 crore gross on its opening day. The film, released on Independence Day, outshined the action thriller ‘Fighter’ starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, which managed to gross ₹22.5 crore on its debut.
Stree 2’s success can be attributed to its positive reviews and strong audience interest, Further enhancing its opening day performance, the film collected a remarkable ₹8.35 crore from preview shows even before its official release.
Despite its star-studded cast including Anil Kapoor, Karan Singh Grover, Akshay Oberoi and Sanjeeda Sheikh, Fighter fell short of Stree 2’s box office performance. The film’s budget, estimated at ₹250 crore, significantly exceeded Stree 2’s ₹50 crore budget.
Despite the massive success of Stree 2, ‘Fighter’ is slated for a sequel, while Stree 2 is the sequel to the 2018 hit film Stree. While Maddock Films and Jio Studios produced Stree 2, Marflix and Viacom 18 Studios are behind Fighter.
Stree 2 has also made history with its overseas release, hitting over 75 countries and screening on over 1,600 screens across 1,250 locations. The film’s popularity has also impacted the performance of other films like Vedaa, which struggled to attract audiences on its opening day despite the Independence Day holiday.
The success of Stree 2 signifies the strong appeal of the horror-comedy genre in India. The film’s strong opening weekend performance sets the stage for a potentially blockbuster run at the box office.
