Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder: Post-Mortem Report Clarifies Misinformation

Misinformation surrounding the tragic rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor has been circulating on social media, claiming the presence of 150 grams of semen in the victim’s body. This claim has been vehemently refuted by the official post-mortem report. According to News18, the 150 grams mentioned in the report actually refers to the weight of the victim’s internal genitalia, specifically the uterus, and not any fluid.

Forensic scientists and doctors have emphasized that post-mortem reports always document the weight of organs. In this case, the 150 grams figure pertains to anatomical measurements, not fluid quantity, as confirmed by a senior forensic scientist who has reviewed the report.

The uterus plays a critical role in preserving fluids, swabs, or semen for an extended period. This makes it an essential organ for collecting and analyzing forensic evidence. Senior forensic experts explained that once collected and processed for DNA profiling, the samples are protected from external influences, ensuring accurate results. The DNA profiling process takes time, but it provides highly reliable results.

News18, citing the post-mortem report and investigation notes, revealed that the forensic team, which arrived five hours after the incident, discovered that the fluids had already congealed into a smear. Although they collected samples from the affected areas and surfaces, no liquid or fluid was gathered due to its solidified state. The collected samples, comprising residual blood, semen, and vaginal swabs, were submitted to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Kolkata on August 12, three days after the incident.

According to News18, a senior police officer explained that the process of collecting forensic evidence, storing it properly, completing necessary paperwork, and submitting it to the central forensic laboratory involves a rigorous protocol that takes time. The Central Forensic Laboratory report is expected to be available by Wednesday, August 21, and will be forwarded to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as authorized by the Kolkata Police. This report will include detailed DNA profiling to identify the perpetrator(s) involved in the crime.

Senior forensic scientists and police officers have highlighted the critical role of DNA analysis in determining the exact number of individuals responsible for the crime. The accurate and thorough analysis of forensic evidence will be crucial in bringing justice to the victim and holding the perpetrators accountable for their heinous actions.
