Milos: A Greek Island Escape With Stunning Beaches and Cozy Hideaways

Milos, a Greek island known for its scenic beauty and unique geological formations, offers a truly unforgettable travel experience. From its picturesque beaches to its charming villages, Milos has something to offer every traveler.

For those seeking a more adventurous escape, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is the ideal way to explore the island’s winding roads, leading to hidden gems and breathtaking vistas. The island’s best hotels, restaurants, and beaches are scattered across the landscape, accessible via a network of snaking roads, some of which are slim, steep, and rocky, with occasional sheer drops on one side. Alternatively, ATVs are another popular mode of transport, but a car offers a more comfortable experience, especially during the summer months when midday temperatures can soar above 34 degrees Celsius.

My journey to Milos began with a stunning two-and-a-half-hour ferry ride from Sifnos. Opting for a slow ship over the faster Sea Jets, I savored the breathtaking scenery while sunbathing on the top deck, trying to hold onto my spinach and feta pastries as the strong summer wind, known as the Meltemi, threatened to send them overboard.

Arriving at Milos Harbour, Adamantas, the island’s tourist hub, I was greeted by a bustling atmosphere. This area boasts several good eateries, including the popular O! Hamos!, where you’ll want to arrive early to secure a table. There are also numerous bars, perfect for enjoying a lively evening. Venturing northwest to Plaka and Tripiti, you’ll find more vibrant restaurants, while the village of Klima offers a picturesque photo opportunity with its colorful fishing houses and stunning sunsets.

The northern side of Milos is home to several must-see beaches, including the lunar-like Sarakiniko. This Instagram-worthy beach is a popular destination, as is Medusa, a nearby taverna overlooking the Mandrakia Bay, where you must try the octopus and Greek salad.

Heading east, you’ll discover Pollonia, another area with multiple restaurants, some of which only open in the evenings. This area offers a quieter atmosphere compared to Adamantas. If you find yourself driving across the middle of the island, make a pit stop at O Zikos, a local favorite known for its traditional dishes and daily specials. The meatballs and pumpkin fritters are highly recommended.

While Milos offers a plethora of things to see and do, the island’s western side, only accessible by boat, remains a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Renting a boat or joining a chartered tour allows you to discover hidden swimming spots and captivating caves.

For those seeking a truly unique island experience, Milos offers a range of accommodations to suit every traveler’s needs. From cozy Airbnbs and villas to hotels catering to couples, solo travelers, and families, there’s something for everyone.
