Vinesh Phogat Speaks Out on Paris Olympics Disqualification: ‘My Wish Was to Fly High the Indian Flag’

In a heartfelt statement following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat revealed her deep disappointment and the weight of her unfulfilled dream. ‘My wish was to fly high the Indian flag at this Olympics,’ she wrote on X (formerly Twitter), ‘to reprimand what the flag went through and what wrestling went through.’

Phogat’s words carry a profound resonance, referencing the recent wrestlers’ protest that shook the nation. She acknowledged the struggles she faced during the protest, emphasizing her commitment to ‘protecting the sanctity of women in India, the sanctity and values of our Indian flag.’

However, the image of herself holding the Indian flag on May 28th, 2023, now haunts her. ‘It was my wish to have the Indian flag fly high this Olympics,’ she continued, ‘to have a picture of the Indian flag with me that truly represents it’s value and restores it’s sanctity.’

Her disqualification feels like a missed opportunity, a chance to represent India on the world stage with a powerful message of redemption. ‘I felt that by doing this it will correctly reprimand what the flag went through and what wrestling went through,’ she said. ‘I really was hoping to show that to my fellow Indians.’

While Phogat hinted at deeper issues, she also acknowledged that words may not be enough. ‘There is so much more to say and so much more to tell but words will never be enough and maybe I will speak again when the time feels right,’ she wrote.

Despite the disappointment and the sense of unfinished business, Phogat’s determination remains unwavering. She affirmed her commitment to fighting for what she believes in and for the right thing. While her future is uncertain, one thing is clear: Vinesh Phogat’s passion for wrestling and her unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations of athletes.
