Former Principal of Kolkata Medical College Questioned in Trainee Doctor’s Murder Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken a significant step in their investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On Saturday, the agency questioned Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of the institution, for several hours.

The interrogation focused on Dr. Ghosh’s knowledge of the victim’s work schedule, particularly her shifts in the chest medicine department. Investigators sought to understand the circumstances surrounding the victim’s extended 48-hour shifts. Dr. Ghosh was also questioned about his actions on the night of the incident, including his initial reaction when he was informed about the trainee doctor’s death. The CBI is keen to understand the chain of events leading to the reporting of the incident to the authorities.

As part of the investigation, the CBI team verified Dr. Ghosh’s statements by comparing them with accounts provided by other doctors, interns, and nurses who were on duty at the hospital on the night of the incident. They also examined his initial response upon learning of the doctor’s death, focusing on how he directed the notification of the family and the steps taken to contact the police.

Beyond the questioning of Dr. Ghosh, the CBI team conducted a site visit to the victim’s rented residence on Sambhunath Pandit Street in South Kolkata. They interviewed his mother, gathering information about his recent activities and obtaining a written statement.

Dr. Sandip Ghosh had resigned from his position as Principal two days after the trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9. The CBI has compiled a list of approximately 40 individuals, including doctors and police officers, who will be questioned as part of their investigation. So far, over 20 individuals have been interrogated.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, sparked widespread protests from the medical community across India. The investigation is ongoing, and the CBI is determined to thoroughly examine all aspects of the case, ensuring justice for the victim and their family.
