Hansi Flick’s reign as Barcelona manager began with a triumphant victory as Robert Lewandowski’s brace secured a 2-1 win over Valencia in the opening match of the Spanish La Liga season.
The Catalan giants faced a tough test in Valencia, who opened the scoring through Hugo Duro’s header in the 44th minute. However, Barcelona rallied late in the first half when Lewandowski equalized in stoppage time.
Flick’s team continued their momentum into the second half and took the lead four minutes after the restart when Lewandowski converted a penalty after Raphinha was fouled inside the penalty area.
Despite Valencia’s valiant efforts, Barcelona held on for the victory. The win marked a positive start to Flick’s tenure and highlighted the importance of Lewandowski’s goal-scoring prowess.
The game also saw the debut of several young players from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, including Gerard Martín and 17-year-old Marc Bernal. However, the game was marred by an injury to defender Alejandro Balde, who was substituted in the second half.
Meanwhile, newly promoted Leganes marked their return to the first division with a 1-1 draw against Osasuna. Juan Cruz gave Leganes the lead in the 22nd minute, but Juan Soriano’s own goal in the 79th minute ensured a share of the spoils.
Barcelona will be looking to build on their opening day win as they aim to challenge Real Madrid for the La Liga title this season. The Los Blancos, who are the reigning champions, will kick off their league campaign on Sunday against Mallorca.
