Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is set to make a significant impact on Panama’s tourism industry by establishing Colon and Panama City as its new home ports. The cruise line plans to operate six voyages between December 2024 and December 2025, offering both embarkation and disembarkation services.
This decision comes on the heels of a similar announcement from Royal Caribbean International (RCI), confirming Panama as its home port for the 2025-2026 Caribbean cruise season. These developments highlight Panama’s growing popularity as a cruise destination, attracting major players in the industry.
NCL’s operations will feature four sailings by its Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Gem vessels, each accommodating between 2,400 and 3,400 passengers. In addition, two sailings will be conducted by the Sirena, a six-star luxury vessel from Oceania Cruises, with a capacity of 800 passengers.
The establishment of home ports in Panama offers a unique opportunity for tourists to experience the country more deeply. Unlike a simple port of call, where visitors typically spend only a few hours exploring, a home port visit allows for a more immersive experience, often lasting for several days. This extended stay fosters greater interaction with the local economy, providing tourists with ample time to explore cultural sites, engage with local businesses, and truly immerse themselves in the destination.
Panama City, a modern metropolis, boasts an impressive skyline filled with towering skyscrapers and an abundance of shopping malls. Visitors can marvel at the engineering feat of the Panama Canal, explore the historical charm of the UNESCO-listed Casco Viejo, and relax on nearby pristine beaches.
Meanwhile, Colon captivates with its idyllic beaches, historic forts like San Lorenzo, and the bustling Colon Free Zone. Together, these cities offer a distinctive blend of culture, history, natural beauty, and adventure, solidifying Panama’s position as a premier global tourist destination.
NCL’s decision to establish home ports in Panama is expected to significantly boost the local economy by generating increased tourism revenue, supporting local businesses, and creating new job opportunities. The influx of tourists will further enhance the vibrancy of these destinations, further strengthening Panama’s reputation as a desirable and unforgettable travel experience.
