A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Sicily, leaving one person dead and seven missing after a 49-meter sailboat sank in rough waters. The incident took place near Porticello, in the province of Palermo, early in the morning. The sailboat, named “Bajesian” and flying the British flag, was carrying a diverse group of 22 passengers, primarily British nationals. The vessel also had passengers from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and two British citizens who were also citizens of France and Ireland.
According to reports, a fierce storm, including water spouts, battered the region overnight, causing the sailboat to sink. Thankfully, swift action by the authorities resulted in the rescue of 15 people. However, the search continues for the seven missing individuals. The Italian fire rescue service confirmed that one body was found near the wreck, adding to the somber nature of the incident.
Rescue efforts have been ongoing since the incident. Coastguard patrol boats and fire brigades have been tirelessly searching the area where the sailboat sank. Divers from the fire brigade have been deployed to reach the hull at a depth of 49 meters, about half a mile from the coast. A helicopter has also been dispatched to assist in the search from above. The missing individuals include four Britons, one Canadian, two Americans, and one crew member.
The “Bajesian” was built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi and was reportedly moored off the port at Porticello before the storm struck. The incident has prompted an investigation by the public prosecutor’s office in Termini Imerese. The tragic event highlights the dangers of navigating the sea during inclement weather conditions and serves as a reminder of the importance of maritime safety.
