Marriott Expands Portfolio with Sonder Partnership, Adding 9,000+ Rooms

Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) has announced a significant partnership with Sonder Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SOND), a leading provider of apartment-style accommodations. This long-term licensing agreement will see over 9,000 rooms added to Marriott’s portfolio by the end of 2024, with an additional 1,500 rooms in development.

The partnership will introduce a new brand collection called “Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy.” This collection will integrate Sonder’s existing and upcoming portfolio, primarily consisting of apartment-style accommodations in urban areas, into the Marriott Bonvoy network. Sonder’s focus on digital-first experiences and catering to longer stays, particularly among younger travelers, aligns well with Marriott’s desire to expand its offerings for diverse traveler demographics.

“We are excited about the addition of Sonder’s portfolio to our system, which will expand our portfolio of longer-stay accommodations in key markets around the world,” said Tim Grisius, Global Officer, M&A, Business Development and Real Estate, Marriott International. “Marriott has long believed in providing the right product at the right price point for all trip purposes and generations of travelers. With the planned addition of Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy, we will be able to provide guests seeking apartment-style urban accommodations with even more options in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.”

Starting later this year, Marriott Bonvoy members will be able to earn and redeem points at approximately 200 Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy locations. By 2025, Sonder properties are expected to be fully integrated with Marriott’s digital platforms, including Marriott.com and the Marriott Bonvoy app.

This partnership marks a strategic move for both companies, allowing Marriott to expand its reach in the growing market for extended-stay accommodations and providing Sonder with access to Marriott’s robust loyalty program and global distribution network. The collaboration is expected to benefit travelers seeking unique and flexible accommodation options in popular urban destinations worldwide.
