Canada is facing a wave of extreme weather events, from wildfires ravaging Jasper National Park and floods inundating Ontario to drought conditions and coastal flooding warnings. Climate change is fueling these events, making extreme temperatures, droughts, and wildfires more frequent, while intensifying rainfall and rising sea levels increase the risk of urban and coastal flooding.
In the face of this challenge, Built Green Canada is offering a lifeline to builders and municipalities working to rebuild. Their programs promote healthy, durable, and sustainably built homes that incorporate climate-resilient strategies. These programs are designed to provide a pathway towards a healthier built environment and improved durability.
One of the lesser-known benefits of sustainably built homes is their improved durability. Built Green’s holistic approach focuses on a tight building envelope balanced with good ventilation and healthy materials, creating a system that contributes to improved indoor air quality and occupant well-being. This approach addresses various aspects, including energy efficiency, material selection, indoor air quality, ventilation, waste management, water conservation, occupant wellness, and business practices.
Recognizing the urgency of rebuilding efforts, Built Green is offering financial support to builders seeking to certify their projects through their programs. Residential builders rebuilding in communities affected by disasters will receive a full waiver on their membership fees, introductory training course fees, and certification fees for their first three builds through the BUILT GREEN® Single Family, Renovation, or Restoration programs. This offer extends through 2025.
The BUILT GREEN® Restoration program, developed in partnership with Hudson Restoration, is a testament to the growing need for sustainable practices in disaster recovery. Hudson Restoration, a boutique, eco-friendly disaster restoration company serving property owners and insurance providers, offers remediation, restoration, and reconstruction services for high-value residential, heritage, and commercial properties. Their partnership with Built Green reflects a forward-thinking approach to restoration, providing customers with greater choice in restoring their properties sustainably.
Built Green’s commitment to building back better extends beyond individual builders. They are actively engaging with municipalities to help guide their rebuilding efforts through a more sustainable lens. Their Communities program provides a framework for incorporating sustainable practices into urban planning and development.
Since its inception in 2003, Built Green Canada has worked with builders to complete over 51,670 BUILT GREEN® certified single-family, multi-family, and high-density projects in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Their dedication to industry input ensures that their programs remain relevant and adaptable to the evolving needs of the construction sector.
By offering support, education, and discounted fees, Built Green Canada is encouraging builders to embrace sustainable practices and build a more resilient future for all Canadians.
