In a stunning display of power hitting, Samoa’s wicketkeeper-batsman Darius Visser shattered a long-standing record previously held by India’s legendary Yuvraj Singh. During the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub Regional East Asia-Pacific Qualifier A match, Visser blasted an incredible 39 runs off a single over, delivered by Vanuatu seamer Nalin Nipiko at Garden Oval No.2 in Apia, Samoa.
Visser’s remarkable achievement came in the form of six consecutive sixes, a feat that surpassed Yuvraj Singh’s 36-run record set during the 2007 T20 World Cup against England. This record-breaking over also overshadowed recent similar performances by Kieron Pollard (2021), Nicholas Pooran (2024), and Dipendra Singh Airee (2024), who all achieved 36-run overs in their respective matches.
Visser’s onslaught began with three back-to-back sixes off the first three balls of Nipiko’s over. He continued his assault by clearing the boundary once more off the fourth legal delivery, propelling Samoa’s total to a hundred. Despite Nipiko’s efforts to contain Visser with a dot ball on the fifth delivery, the 28-year-old remained undeterred. He capitalized on the momentum, smashing another six from the third no-ball of the over. To cap off his remarkable performance, Visser concluded the over with yet another maximum, securing his place in history as the first Samoan player to hit a century in international cricket.
Visser’s outstanding innings included an impressive 14 sixes, only four shy of the record for the most sixes hit by a single batter in a men’s T20I match. His game-changing knock of 132 runs from a mere 62 deliveries proved to be the catalyst for Samoa’s second victory in the tournament. This triumph kept their aspirations of qualifying for the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup edition alive and kicking.
