The original Atari 7800, released in 1986, was Atari’s first hardware foray after the video game crash of 1983. While it didn’t achieve the same level of success as the NES and Sega Master System, it made its mark as one of the first backward compatible consoles and boasted solid ports of arcade classics like Food Fight, Galaga, and Dig Dug.
The new Atari 7800+ boasts a compact design that fits perfectly on any modern TV. Similar to the Atari 2600+ released last year, the 7800+ encourages players to use their own game cartridges, offering the authentic experience of playing on an official system. With HDMI connectivity and widescreen support, the 7800+ offers a seamless gaming experience on modern displays. Unlike pre-bundled systems like the NES Classic Edition, the Atari 7800+ provides the flexibility to expand your game library with a vast collection of 2600 and 7800 cartridges.
To further enhance the retro gaming experience, Atari is releasing 10 new game cartridges compatible with the system. These include classic titles like Astroids Deluxe, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, and Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, along with compilation cartridges like the Epyx Game Collections and RealSports Collection. Each game cartridge retails for $30 and comes with a colorful game manual, adding a nostalgic touch to the experience.
For optimal control, Atari and Plaion are also releasing the CX78+ Wireless Gamepad and CX40+ Wireless Joystick, each priced at $35. A CX78+ gamepad and a copy of Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest will be bundled with every Atari 7800+.
