Ganguly Family Joins Kolkata Protests Demanding Justice for Doctor Murder

Protests against the brutal rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata continued on Wednesday, with a prominent figure from the world of Indian cricket joining the movement. Former captain Sourav Ganguly, along with his wife Dona and daughter Sana, led a candlelight vigil, demanding justice for the deceased. The Gangulys, known for their social activism, emphasized the need for a safe society and expressed their deep concern over the escalating violence against women.

Dona Ganguly, a renowned Odissi dancer, addressed the gathering, stating, “We are protesting against rape. We need a safe society. Rape needs to stop.” Her daughter Sana echoed this sentiment, adding, “We want justice, this has to stop. Every day we hear about some rape case and we feel bad that this is happening even in 2024 and this has to stop.”

The protest comes amidst a nationwide doctors’ agitation led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which entered its tenth day on Wednesday. The IMA is demanding increased security for doctors and hospitals following the tragic incident in Kolkata. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continued its investigation into the case, questioning the former principal of RG Kar Medical College.

The horrific incident has sparked outrage across India, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change to address the issue of violence against women. The participation of the Ganguly family in the protest further underscores the gravity of the situation and serves as a powerful symbol of solidarity with the victim’s family and the medical community.
