Tamil Nadu Emerges as India’s Green Hydrogen Hub with Sembcorp’s $4.5 Billion Investment

Tamil Nadu is on the cusp of becoming India’s leading green hydrogen hub, with Singapore-based energy giant Sembcorp Industries making a landmark investment of Rs 36,238 crore ($4.5 billion). This investment will establish a state-of-the-art green hydrogen and green ammonia manufacturing facility in the port city of Tuticorin, located in the southern part of Tamil Nadu.

The plant, spanning over 160 acres, will be responsible for producing 200,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia annually. This green ammonia will be exported to Japan, signifying a crucial step towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

The project has already entered an advanced stage, with front-end engineering and design work underway. The land in Tuticorin port has been secured, and the off-take agreement for the export of green ammonia was signed on Tuesday. This agreement represents a groundbreaking collaboration between India, Singapore, and Japan, marking the first such cross-border export facilitated by Singapore.

The project underscores Tamil Nadu’s commitment to becoming a leader in the green hydrogen sector. Chief Minister M K Stalin laid the foundation stone for the facility during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2024, highlighting the state’s ambition to become a hub for green energy. Tamil Nadu’s prior experience with the wind industry and its dedication to attracting clean energy investments position it as a prime location for green hydrogen production.

The project’s impact extends beyond the energy sector. It is expected to create over one lakh jobs, contributing significantly to Tamil Nadu’s economic growth. This investment further strengthens the deep cultural and investment ties between Tamil Nadu, Singapore, and Japan.

The initiative underscores India’s commitment to achieving its ambitious renewable energy targets. By capitalizing on its vast solar and wind energy potential, India is poised to become a global leader in green hydrogen production, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
