During a press conference in Kyiv, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unwavering commitment to resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through “dialogue and diplomacy.”
Jaishankar stated that both Prime Minister Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed their dedication to further cooperation in upholding international law, including the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, such as respect for territorial integrity and state sovereignty.
He also mentioned the upcoming Summit on Peace in Ukraine, scheduled for June 2024. This summit serves as a platform for ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Additionally, Jaishankar highlighted the continued bilateral cooperation between India and Ukraine in areas such as trade, commerce, and education.
In response to queries regarding sanctions against Russia, Jaishankar clarified that India generally does not impose sanctions on any country. This stance aligns with India’s historical approach to international relations.
He stated that India primarily adheres to and respects UN-imposed sanctions, recognizing their significance in maintaining global order and stability.
