CBI Takes Over Probe into Financial Irregularities at RG Kar Medical College

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata during the tenure of former principal Sandip Ghosh. This action follows directives from the Calcutta High Court, which transferred the probe from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI.

The CBI collected necessary documents from the SIT on Saturday and proceeded to re-register the FIR. The high court had issued these directives in response to a petition by former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Akhtar Ali. Ali had requested a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into alleged financial misconduct at the medical college during Ghosh’s tenure.

The college has been under media scrutiny since the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor on campus on August 9th.

The high court has directed the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation within three weeks. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for September 17th to review the report.

Additionally, an FIR has been filed against Sandip Ghosh, the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, by the CBI Anti Corruption Branch. The Calcutta High Court single bench ordered this action. The case is connected to the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the campus. The CBI began a corruption investigation against Ghosh by filing the FIR. The SIT, on the order of the Calcutta High Court, handed over all the relevant documents to the CBI office at Nizam Palace on Saturday morning. The CBI filed the FIR after receiving these documents and has already submitted a copy to the Alipur CJM Court.
