On August 26th, Ukraine was subjected to a massive and coordinated attack by Russia, involving over 100 missiles and 100 drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attack in a video message, describing it as one of the largest combined strikes, targeting various regions across the country. The barrage caused significant damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, forcing authorities to implement emergency blackouts to stabilize the power grid. Train schedules were also disrupted due to the attacks.
Following the assault, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal condemned the attack as an act of terrorism targeting critical infrastructure. He confirmed damage in several regions, highlighting the devastating impact of Russia’s actions.
In the wake of the attack, Zelensky appealed to European allies for greater support, calling for collaboration with Ukrainian F-16s and European fighter jets to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Drawing a parallel to the successful collaboration between the US and Israel in the Middle East to counter Iranian projectiles, Zelensky argued that similar unity should exist within Europe to protect Ukraine.
Zelensky further urged allies to lift restrictions on long-range weapons, allowing Ukraine to launch strikes deeper into Russian territory. He stressed the importance of collaborative action to halt what he termed ‘Russian terror,’ emphasizing the shared responsibility of global partners to protect Ukraine.
