Manchester United appears poised to spend around $240 million on new players this summer, with the imminent signing of Uruguay defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. British media reports indicate that United has reached a preliminary agreement to acquire Ugarte for €50 million ($55 million), potentially adding an additional €10 million ($11 million) in performance-based bonuses. While neither United nor PSG has officially confirmed the deal, the news has sent ripples through the football world.
The 23-year-old Ugarte would become Manchester United’s fifth signing during the current transfer window. He joins striker Joshua Zirkzee, center-backs Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, and full-back Noussair Mazraoui as new additions to the squad. Ugarte has been a key target for United throughout the summer, signifying their determination to strengthen their midfield.
The arrival of Ugarte is expected to be partially offset by the departure of Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay, who is reportedly set to join Napoli for a fee of £25 million ($33 million). McTominay, a long-time United player who joined the club at the age of five, has made 253 appearances for the first team, scoring 29 goals. However, he has not been a regular fixture in Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup.
With this significant investment in new players, Manchester United is clearly aiming for a successful season, signaling their ambitious intentions to compete for major trophies both domestically and in Europe.
