CBI Seeks Polygraph Test for Kolkata Police Officer in Doctor Rape Case

In a significant development in the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought permission from a Kolkata court to conduct a polygraph test on Kolkata Police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Anup Dutta. This request comes after the agency already conducted lie-detector tests on seven individuals, including the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, the primary accused Sanjay Roy, and five others.

According to news agency PTI, ASI Dutta is suspected of having close connections with Sanjay Roy, who worked as a police volunteer at a police post near RG Kar Hospital. The CBI believes that Dutta may have aided Roy in concealing the crime.

The investigation agency is keen to determine if Roy informed Dutta about the crime and whether Dutta provided any assistance in covering it up. The court will decide on the application for a polygraph test after obtaining Dutta’s consent.

It’s important to understand that while a polygraph test, also known as a lie detector test, can help identify inconsistencies in the statements of suspects and witnesses, it is not admissible evidence in a trial. The test works by monitoring physiological responses like heart rate, breathing patterns, sweating, and blood pressure to detect potential discrepancies in responses. The results are primarily used to gather further leads in an investigation.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread protests in West Bengal from the medical fraternity and opposition leaders, demanding swift justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor who was raped and killed on August 9th. The CBI has already arrested Sanjay Roy, the primary accused, based on compelling evidence linking him to the crime.
