Meghan Markle’s Colombian Style: A Masterclass in Neutrals with One Misstep

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was lauded for her chic and modern style during her recent visit to Colombia. The four-day tour, arranged by Colombian Vice President Francia Marquez, saw Meghan embracing a diverse range of designers, including Colombian labels, and opting for elegant and effortless silhouettes that perfectly complemented each engagement.

Fashion expert Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at SilkFred, praised the Duchess for delivering a masterclass in how to stand out using neutral tones. Watkins described Meghan’s approach as “California cool girl,” with a preference for classic silhouettes and minimalist styling. While her boldest look in terms of color was the green-printed Andrés Otalora poplin dress worn on the final day, Meghan primarily stuck to a palette of cool browns, whites, and blacks throughout the tour.

One of Meghan’s most praised looks was the Johanna Ortiz cut-out maxi dress she wore on the first day during a visit to the Delia Zapata Art Centre in Bogota. The dress, featuring a small midriff cut-out and a “Navajo tweed” print in browns and reds, showcased Meghan’s modern sensibilities and her penchant for artisanal pieces. The sweetheart neckline and straps added an elegant touch, perfect for a summery style.

Two other standout outfits included the brown ensemble worn on the first day at the Responsible Digital Future forum and the head-to-toe white look she sported on day three while visiting the historic San Basilio de Palenque. Watkins highlighted how these looks demonstrated that monochromatic dressing can be both stylish and impactful with clever and classic styling.

However, not every outfit received accolades. Watkins pointed out that Meghan’s first look upon arriving in Colombia, a navy blue two-piece by Veronica Beard, didn’t quite match the relaxed vibe of the rest of her tour wardrobe.

Meghan’s Colombian style showed a shift towards more summery silhouettes and styles, incorporating bandeaus, sunhats, thong sandals, and linen separates. Watkins observed that the Duchess seemed to be embracing a more relaxed approach to her wardrobe and possibly discovering a personal style that felt more authentic to her.
