Marriott International has received a significant honor – being named one of the 2024 PEOPLE® Companies that Care. This marks the fifth consecutive year the company has been recognized, and this time, it holds the distinguished position of number four on the list. This achievement is a testament to Marriott’s unwavering commitment to its sustainability and social impact initiative, Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction.
Anthony Capuano, President and Chief Executive Officer of Marriott International, expressed his pride in this recognition, stating, “It is an honor to be consistently included in the PEOPLE Companies that Care list. This recognition is a testament to the strength of our enduring culture and one of our core values to Serve Our World. We are proud of our global teams working together to help make Marriott a force for good in the communities where we do business.”
One of the key aspects highlighted by PEOPLE magazine in recognizing Marriott International was its unwavering commitment to hiring refugees worldwide. In 2022, Marriott pledged to employ 1,500 refugees in the U.S. by 2025, and in 2023, extended this commitment by pledging to hire over 1,500 refugees across its European operations by 2026. Since these pledges, Marriott has successfully employed over 1,000 refugees in the U.S. and 600 in Europe. The stories of refugees like cousins Ehsanullah Safi and Shah Faisal Safi, who found meaningful employment opportunities with Marriott, serve as powerful examples of the company’s dedication to empowering individuals.
Marriott’s commitment extends beyond refugee hiring, demonstrated by its swift and impactful response to disasters. Following the devastating wildfires that struck Maui in August 2023, Marriott provided essential housing and meals for community members, including many of its own associates and their families. In the weeks following the disaster, Marriott, in collaboration with The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, the Marriott Disaster Relief Fund, the TakeCare Relief Fund (TCRF), its hotels, and Marriott Bonvoy, contributed approximately $5.5 million to aid relief efforts and provide essential items for over 2,500 affected associates and the wider community. Beyond financial aid, Marriott focused on supporting local families and restoring a sense of normalcy for children in the area. With the fires occurring just before the new school year, Marriott offered daily lunches to students, faculty, and staff in West Maui and partnered with other organizations to provide essential items such as backpacks, clothing, and water bottles.
Marriott’s commitment to humanitarian relief has been evident during other crises as well, including the 2023 earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. This steadfast commitment to caring for people, the communities it serves, and the environment has consistently earned Marriott recognition as a leading employer.
