Grammy-nominated rapper Afroman, best known for his hit song “Because I Got High”, celebrated the legalization of recreational marijuana in Ohio with a humorous and celebratory video posted on social media. In the five-minute clip, Afroman, whose real name is Joseph Foreman, raised a large pink and gold goblet, addressing his fellow Ohioans with a hearty “You’re welcome” as he toasted the new law. He playfully claimed responsibility for making weed legal in the state, thanking “all the people that supported and stayed down like four flat tires.”
The video was posted on August 6th, the day recreational marijuana officially went on sale at over 100 existing medical marijuana shops throughout Ohio, including those owned by multi-state operators like Verano Holdings, Trulieve, Curaleaf Holdings, Rise Dispensaries, Acreage Holdings, and Green Thumb Industries.
Afroman’s celebratory message included a call for freedom of speech, as well as a surprising announcement of his potential presidential candidacy. “Now that I got marijuana legal in the state of Ohio, I gotta fight for freedom of speech. And just like I got marijuana legal in Ohio, I can get it legal all over the United States of America if you put Afroman in office. I’m just putting that out there,” he said as he raised his goblet.
His video, which has since gone viral, showcases Afroman’s signature humor and playful approach to social issues. It highlights the growing acceptance of marijuana legalization and the unique role that entertainment can play in driving social change. It remains to be seen if Afroman’s presidential aspirations will take shape, but his humorous and lighthearted approach to serious issues continues to resonate with fans.
