The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA), California Operation Lifesaver (CAOL), Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), Amtrak, and other rail partners kicked off September Rail Safety Month with a special safety train event in Oakland. The event brought together key players in the rail industry to focus on the importance of safety around railroad tracks and crossings.
The primary goal of this initiative is to raise public awareness and promote responsible behavior near railway infrastructure. Managing Director of Capitol Corridor, Rob Padgette, emphasized the top priority of passenger safety, stating that the organization is actively collaborating with cities and counties along its routes to prevent incidents at railroad crossings, particularly between Oakland and Hayward.
The event involved a train ride where city officials and representatives from Oakland, San Leandro, and Hayward boarded to observe firsthand areas where innovative safety measures are most needed in their communities. Nancy Sheehan-McCulloch, Executive Director of California Operation Lifesaver, highlighted the collective effort needed to prevent track tragedies. She urged everyone to share rail safety tips with loved ones, emphasizing the crucial role of community involvement in making a difference.
September has been designated as Rail Safety Month in California since 2009, recognizing the dedication of California Operation Lifesaver and its partners in promoting safety and saving lives. Peggy Ygbuhay, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Union Pacific Railroad, underscored the company’s commitment to the communities they serve. She emphasized the significance of Rail Safety Month as an opportunity to reset habits, urging individuals to never attempt to outrun a train and to always utilize designated crossings when walking over the tracks.
The event also involved active participation from Amtrak, Union Pacific Railroad police, and local law enforcement officers from various jurisdictions, both on the train and on the ground. They issued warnings and citations to individuals who disregarded traffic signs and signals at railroad crossings. Amtrak Police Department Inspector Doug Calcagno emphasized the importance of collaboration across the industry to address track incidents and ensure public safety. He stressed the significance of working together as a team to ensure everyone’s well-being.
Throughout September, Capitol Corridor and its rail partners will continue their efforts to raise awareness and educate the public on rail safety through a variety of initiatives, including public awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and safety demonstrations. Their collective goal is to create a safer environment for everyone and prevent tragic incidents involving trains and pedestrians.
