Pablo Larraín, the Chilean filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed biopics ‘Jackie’ and ‘Spencer,’ has cast Angelina Jolie as the legendary opera singer Maria Callas in his upcoming film. The film, tentatively titled ‘Maria Callas,’ will explore the final years of the Greek-American soprano’s life, focusing on her time in Paris during the 1970s.
Known as ‘La Divina,’ Maria Callas was one of the most celebrated opera singers of the 20th century. Her powerful voice and dramatic performances brought a renewed appreciation for the works of composers like Bellini and Rossini. While Callas was revered for her artistry, her personal life was often overshadowed by scandal and heartbreak. She endured a difficult childhood and a turbulent first marriage to business tycoon Giovanni Battista Meneghini. She later embarked on a long-term relationship with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who famously left her for Jacqueline Kennedy.
Larraín’s film is expected to delve into these tumultuous aspects of Callas’ life. Steven Knight, screenwriter of ‘Spencer,’ is penning the script, and the film will be set in the final years before her death from a heart attack at the age of 53. While it’s not yet confirmed whether Jolie will sing in the film, the actress has expressed her commitment to honoring Callas’ legacy. ‘I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy,’ Jolie said in a statement. ‘I will give all I can to meet the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired.’
Larraín, known for his intimate and nuanced portrayals of historical figures, has described the project as a long-awaited dream. ‘Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream,’ he said. ‘Maria Callas’ is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August 2024, making it a highly anticipated film for both opera enthusiasts and moviegoers alike.
