Bengaluru Loses Its Spot on India’s Rich List, Sparking Criticism of City’s Development

The recently released Hurun India Rich List 2024 unveiled a significant shift in the preferences of India’s wealthiest individuals. While the list saw a record-breaking number of billionaires, with over 300 individuals making the cut, it also revealed a decline in Bengaluru’s standing as a hub for billionaires.

This shift has sparked concern and criticism, particularly from prominent figures like Infosys co-founder TV Mohandas Pai. Pai expressed his disappointment at Bengaluru’s drop in ranking, pointing to Hyderabad as the city that has now surpassed Bengaluru in terms of attracting wealthy individuals.

Attributing this decline to a lack of development and effective governance, Pai publicly criticized the Karnataka government for prioritizing grandiose projects over essential infrastructure and improvements. He took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to highlight the issue, tagging Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and other influential figures from the state, including Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan and Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.

Pai’s statement underscores the growing concern about Bengaluru’s future as a thriving business and technology hub. The city’s decline in the Hurun India Rich List 2024 serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved governance and a focus on sustainable development to attract and retain top talent and investment.
