SA20 League Season 3: Fixtures Announced, Sunrisers Eastern Cape to Face MI Cape Town in Opener

The South African T20 league, SA20, is gearing up for its third season, with the fixtures for the tournament announced on Monday. The action kicks off on January 9th at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, where defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape will lock horns with MI Cape Town in the opening match.

The tournament promises to be a thrilling affair, featuring a strong contingent of international stars. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik will be representing Paarl Royals, while England’s Joe Root and Ben Stokes will be playing for MI Cape Town. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will also be making his SA20 debut, playing for Durban Super Giants. Anrich Nortje returns after missing the second edition due to injury.

The playoffs will take place at three venues, with the top two teams battling it out in Qualifier 1 at St George’s Park. The winner of Qualifier 1 advances to the final, while the loser faces the winner of the Eliminator (which will be contested by the third and fourth placed teams) in Qualifier 2. Both Qualifier 2 and the final will be held at Centurion.

SA20 League commissioner and former South Africa captain Graeme Smith expressed his excitement about the upcoming season, stating, “We’re thrilled to start the season in Gqeberha with our defending champions and look forward to an action-packed summer of cricket. As we welcome international talent to the roaring pool of local stars, we aim to deliver an unforgettable experience for both players and fans alike.”

The final of the tournament is scheduled for February 8th at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.
