US Open’s Hidden Gem: A Salon for Tennis Stars

The US Open is a whirlwind of athletic prowess, intense matches, and unwavering focus. But amidst the high-stakes competition, a sanctuary of self-care awaits: a pop-up salon nestled within Arthur Ashe Stadium. This haven, created by renowned hairstylist Julien Farel, offers a respite for tennis stars seeking a touch of pampering.

Donna Vekić, a Croatian tennis player, recently celebrated her victory with a fresh look. “I just won and I want bangs,” she proclaimed after defeating Peyton Stearns. Her post-match routine included a trip to Farel’s salon for a haircut inspired by actress Margot Robbie.

The idea for this unique salon emerged over two decades ago when Farel approached the United States Tennis Association. He envisioned a space where athletes could unwind and feel their best during the grueling US Open tournament. “It took them five years to say yes,” Farel recalls with a smile. “I was persistent because I knew this would be a perk for many athletes.” His vision proved accurate, as the salon has become a cherished tradition for players, a chance for them to recharge and feel confident.

The salon boasts a star-studded clientele, including some of tennis’s most celebrated figures. Farel cut Rafael Nadal’s hair from long to short in 2010, a significant moment for both player and stylist. The chairs have also welcomed legends like Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, and even Coco Gauff, last year’s US Open champion, graced the salon after her victory.

While the salon offers a limited selection compared to its Upper East Side counterpart, it provides essential services: haircuts, blowouts, braids, updos, makeup, manicures, and pedicures. “These are things that a player can stop by, take time for their well-being, and walk out feeling good,” Farel explains. With over 500 players competing in this year’s Open, the salon is buzzing with activity, fully booked with appointments.

The salon serves as a testament to the importance of self-care in a demanding sport. It’s a place where athletes can temporarily escape the pressures of competition and emerge feeling refreshed and revitalized, ready to conquer the court once again. “To have somebody give their all on the court then come here is an honor,” says Farel, acknowledging the trust and dedication of the players who choose to spend a moment of relaxation in his unique sanctuary.
