A key section of Scotland’s renowned North Coast 500 (NC500), one of the most popular road trip routes in the UK, will be temporarily closed for two months in the fall of 2024. The Bealach na Ba, a stunning yet challenging road leading to Applecross in Scotland, will face evening and overnight closures throughout September and October 2024. This closure is part of essential works by fish-farm company Bakkafrost, which will be installing a private wire to supply power to its Kishorn hatchery.
The shutdown will occur between 8 pm and 7 am, with additional closures anticipated in early 2025. The NC500, spanning 516 miles, is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and has been consistently ranked among the best scenic drives in the world. However, the temporary closure has sparked concerns among local residents and businesses. Megan MacInnes, a local councillor in Applecross, voiced these concerns, noting that the closure may negatively impact livelihoods and local businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector.
A spokesperson for Bakkafrost acknowledged the disruption but emphasized the need for safety and efficiency. Drivers will be diverted via Shieldaig during the closure, with work teams operating long hours to complete the project before winter. The NC500 offers an unforgettable journey through the rugged Scottish Highlands, featuring diverse experiences from sandy beaches to historic castles. Despite the temporary inconvenience, the route remains a bucket-list destination for travelers worldwide.
