Uruguay’s star striker, Luis Suarez, has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 17-year career representing his nation. The 37-year-old, who holds the record for most goals scored for Uruguay with 69, made his debut in 2007 and played a pivotal role in the team’s success, including reaching the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and winning the Copa America in 2011.
Suarez, known for his fierce determination and clinical finishing, shared his decision with an emotional press conference on Monday, stating that Friday’s match against Paraguay in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup will be his final appearance for Uruguay. He emphasized that this decision was his own and not forced upon him by injuries or lack of selection, bringing him a sense of peace and fulfillment.
“My dream was for my children to see me win something important with the national team … that last goal was very nice for them and even though it wasn’t a trophy to take home, it was very nice for them,” he said.
He expressed his desire to say goodbye to his devoted fans in his home stadium, the Centenario in Montevideo, allowing his children to experience this special moment alongside him.
Suarez’s career has been marked by both triumphs and controversies, but his talent and passion have earned him widespread recognition and admiration. He has played for some of the world’s top clubs, including Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid, winning numerous trophies and individual accolades.
Following his international retirement, Suarez will continue playing club football, having joined Major League Soccer side Inter Miami last year, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. His last goal for Uruguay, scored in stoppage time against Canada in the Copa America in July, cemented his legacy as a true legend for his nation.
