Germany’s Frohms Retires From National Team After Olympic Bench

Merle Frohms, a key figure in Germany’s run to the Euro 2022 final, has announced her retirement from the national team. The 29-year-old goalkeeper’s decision comes shortly after she was surprisingly benched for the Paris Olympics tournament.

Frohms, who earned 52 caps for Germany, revealed her decision in a statement released by the German Football Federation. She expressed her desire to dedicate herself fully to her club career with Wolfsburg and emphasized the importance of reconnecting with her family and friends.

Frohms revealed that she had already made the decision to leave the national team after the Olympic Games last year. Gotham FC’s Ann-Katrin Berger, who started in goal for Germany during their bronze medal victory at the Olympics, took her place.

Despite Frohms’ absence, Germany’s new coach, Christian Wück, who took over after the Olympics, expressed his desire to work with the experienced goalkeeper. He stated that Frohms would have remained a key player for the team had she decided to continue her national team career. “I would have been very happy to work with Merle and I made that clear to her as well in a personal conversation,” Wück said in a statement. “Now she has made this decision, which I obviously must respect.”
